A Quinnipiac University national poll highlights social media as the main driver of divisions in the US, according to 35 percent of respondents, surpassing blame on political leaders, cable news channels, or other countries. Among voters aged 18 to 34, a significant 45 percent hold social media accountable, showcasing its impact on younger demographics.

Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy emphasized the correlation between heavy social media use and critical viewpoints, revealing a generational divide in perception. Ahead of Thanksgiving, 61 percent of surveyed voters prefer to steer clear of political discussions during gatherings, prioritizing unity over divisive topics, regardless of demographics.

Malloy echoed this sentiment, highlighting a collective preference for a politics-free Thanksgiving, stating, “A healthy dose of ‘zip it’ will be on the menu… about the food and not about politics.” Despite political events impacting discussions for 30 percent negatively, 59 percent felt no change in their willingness to discuss politics with family and friends.

Conducted with 1,574 registered voters from November 9th to 13th, the Quinnipiac University Poll maintains a non-partisan approach and a +/- 2.5 percentage points margin of error, capturing diverse voter sentiments. These findings underline social media’s impact on division and the widespread desire to maintain unity during Thanksgiving gatherings.
