NYC Buses Ranked Among Slowest in the Country, Advocates Urge Mayor Adams to Prioritize Investment
New York City buses continue to rank among the slowest in the nation, prompting transit advocates, including Danny Pearlstein from Riders Alliance, to call on Mayor Adams to enhance investments in the city’s transit system.
Recent data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reveals that buses on the streets of New York City are averaging a speed of 8.18 miles per hour. While this speed is slightly slower than the previous year, the data indicates an improvement compared to 2019 but a slowdown compared to 2015.
Pearlstein emphasized that the Adams Administration is lagging behind the city’s laws mandating the construction of 30 miles of bus lanes annually through 2026.
According to Pearlstein, City Hall has impeded progress on several bus improvement projects by halting them before construction can commence. Advocates stress the need for accelerated efforts to enhance bus infrastructure and address the challenges affecting the efficiency of public transportation in the city.
