Senator Lee Appears to Distance Himself from U.S. Capitol Riot Conspiracy Theories

In a potential shift, Utah Senator Mike Lee seems to be stepping back from conspiracy theories surrounding the 2021 U.S. Capitol Riot. Senator Lee has consistently asserted that the individuals who stormed the U.S. Capitol were not supporters of then-President Trump but, instead, were federal agents. He specifically pointed to a video featuring a man named Kevin Lyons as evidence supporting his claims. However, recent developments have prompted a reevaluation of these assertions.

The video in question showed Kevin Lyons holding an object that Senator Lee initially identified as a badge, suggesting federal agency affiliation. Subsequent investigations, however, revealed that the object was, in fact, a vape. This week, Senator Lee addressed reporters and appeared to alter his stance, stating that Kevin Lyons “was probably not” a federal agent, citing the fact that Lyons is currently incarcerated.

This adjustment in Senator Lee’s position raises questions about the credibility of the conspiracy theories he previously espoused regarding the Capitol Riot. As the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, continues, lawmakers’ statements and perspectives on the matter are subject to scrutiny and evolving narratives.
