Everett, WA – In a concerted effort to address Washington state’s escalating illegal drug crisis, Governor Jay Inslee is urging lawmakers to bolster funding dedicated to combating the issue. Governor Inslee unveiled his proposal during a roundtable discussion held at the Evergreen Recovery Center in Everett, where he engaged with experts to outline the details of the initiative.
Under the proposed plan, Governor Inslee is advocating for a $50 million increase in spending on efforts to curb the illegal drug epidemic. If approved, this additional funding will be allocated over the next four years until 2025. Presently, the state’s budget designates $200 million for various aspects of the drug crisis, including support for treatment facilities, rental subsidies for individuals undergoing treatment, and criminal diversion programs.
The move comes at a crucial juncture as Washington grapples with the multifaceted challenges posed by illegal drugs, impacting communities across the state. Governor Inslee’s proposal emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and sustained approach to address the root causes of the crisis and provide support to those affected.
Washington is set to receive a significant influx of funds in the form of $82 million from settlements resulting from lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and pharmacies. Governor Inslee envisions these funds as a crucial component in the state’s arsenal to combat the illegal drug problem effectively.
