Washington, D.C.

Madison’s Democratic congressman, Mark Pocan, is shedding light on his decision not to support the national declaration condemning antisemitism, a resolution brought forward by Republicans on Capitol Hill. Pocan, known for his principled stance, deems the resolution as lacking meaningful impact in addressing the issue.

Congressman Pocan asserted that the Republican-sponsored resolution falls short in tackling antisemitism in a substantive and practical manner. In explaining his decision, he stated, “It does nothing to address antisemitism in a real and tangible way.” His criticism emphasizes the need for comprehensive measures to combat antisemitism beyond symbolic declarations.

During the recent voting session, Pocan opted to register a “present” vote on the resolution, signaling his reluctance to fully endorse the proposal. Despite his divergence on this particular resolution, Pocan remains vocal about his support for the Jewish people in both Wisconsin and the United States.

However, the congressman clarified that his decision is rooted in his refusal to align with what he perceives as Republican attempts to “use the Jewish community for political gain.” Pocan’s stance underscores the complexities and political sensitivities surrounding efforts to address antisemitism in the national discourse.
