The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has approved a proposal to allocate $8 million towards housing programs for over 900 individuals undergoing treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. This initiative, spearheaded by County Supervisor Jim Desmond, expands upon a successful pilot program and aims to provide stable housing for vulnerable members of the homeless community actively seeking recovery.
The pilot program, initially launched in 2021, demonstrated significant success in helping individuals overcome addiction and transition back into stable housing. The expansion, funded for two years, will build upon this success by offering housing assistance to a significantly larger group of individuals in need.
This program addresses two critical challenges faced by the homeless community: addiction and housing instability. By providing secure housing alongside ongoing treatment, the program helps individuals focus on recovery without the additional stress of finding and maintaining safe and affordable housing.
The program will prioritize members of the homeless community who are actively engaged in substance abuse treatment programs. Individuals will receive rental assistance and support services to help them navigate the housing process and maintain stable housing long-term.
