Talk about lucky finds! A Virginia woman’s keen eye and some social media savvy turned a thrift store bargain into a six-figure payday. Jessica Vincent and her partner are seasoned Goodwill shoppers, always on the lookout for hidden gems. But nothing could have prepared them for the incredible discovery they made back in June.
Amongst the usual assortment of clothing and knick-knacks, Vincent spotted a bottle-shaped vase with swirling red and green patterns. For just $4, the unassuming piece made its way into their shopping cart. But a little something on the bottom sparked Vincent’s curiosity.
“I remembered watching ‘Antiques Roadshow’ once where they talked about markings on Murano glass,” Vincent explains. So, she took a closer look, and sure enough, there it was – a tiny “M” on the base. This seemingly insignificant detail was the key to unlocking the vase’s true value.
Vincent, knowing she might be onto something special, turned to Facebook. “I posted a picture in a vintage glassware group, hoping someone could tell me more about it,” she says. Her instincts were spot-on. Within hours, members identified the vase as a rare piece designed by renowned Italian architect Carlo Scarpa in the 1940s.
With excitement mounting, Vincent contacted auction house experts, who confirmed the vase’s authenticity and immense value. It was later auctioned off for a jaw-dropping $107,100, transforming Vincent’s $4 find into a windfall.
“It’s still hard to believe,” Vincent laughs. “We’re planning to use the money to pay off some bills and maybe take a well-deserved vacation.” This lucky discovery not only changed Vincent’s finances but also serves as a reminder that hidden treasures can be found in the most unexpected places. So, keep your eyes peeled next time you’re browsing a thrift store – you never know what hidden gem you might unearth!
