Four men suspected of carrying out the deadly attack at Crocus City Hall on Sunday, March 24th, 2024, appeared in Basmanny District Court on Monday. All four displayed visible injuries, raising serious concerns about potential torture in their detention.
The suspects face preliminary charges of terrorism, potentially leading to life imprisonment if convicted. The court may extend their initial detention period indefinitely, with a current maximum deadline of May 22nd.
Seven additional individuals, possibly connected to the attack, have been detained by security forces but not yet publicly identified.
Among those brought before the court was 19-year-old Muhammad-Sobir Faizov, who appeared unconscious on a medical chair and without handcuffs. This, alongside circulated videos on Telegram purporting to show brutal interrogations of the suspects, raises questions about the treatment they may have received in custody. These videos allegedly depict violence including the severing and forced ingestion of an ear, and beatings with rifle butts.
The Crocus City Hall attack is considered the deadliest in Russia in over two decades, leaving the country in shock. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the massacre, and investigators are working to understand their motives.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
