Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, has surrendered to law enforcement and is now in federal custody, facing charges of bank fraud totaling $16 million. Mizuhara appeared in a Los Angeles court for the first time on Friday (April 12), where he was ordered released on a $25,000 bond.
During the court proceeding, which lasted about 25 minutes, Mizuhara did not enter a plea. The U.S. District Court magistrate judge, Maria Audero, set an arraignment date for May 9, where Mizuhara will formally respond to the charges against him.
As part of his release conditions, Mizuhara must undergo gambling addiction treatment and avoid contact with gamblers, bookmakers, or Shohei Ohtani. These measures aim to address the allegations that Mizuhara embezzled funds from Ohtani’s account to cover illegal gambling expenses.
The federal criminal complaint filed against Mizuhara accuses him of bank fraud by sending $16 million from Ohtani’s account to an illegal sports gambling operation without Ohtani’s knowledge. The case highlights the severity of the charges, with Mizuhara potentially facing up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
U.S. Attorney E. Martin Estrada emphasized that Shohei Ohtani was a victim in this case and stressed that there was no indication of wrongdoing on Ohtani’s part. Ohtani himself has publicly stated that he was unaware of the fraudulent activities and had never bet on baseball or engaged with bookmakers knowingly.
