The equipment, used to broadcast images of northern Gaza, was confiscated by Israeli officials citing a new media law. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Press Secretary Jean-Pierre labeled the seizure as “concerning” but stopped short of outright condemnation. “We stand firm in our belief in making sure that journalists have the ability and the right to do their job,” she said, adding that the White House will look further into the matter.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Israeli authorities seized AP’s camera and broadcasting kit in southern Israel. The Israeli government justified the action by accusing the news organization of violating a recently enacted media law that bans the distribution of content to Al Jazeera, a Qatari satellite channel. Julie Pace, AP’s Executive Editor, stated, “We decry in the strongest terms the actions of the Israeli government.” The AP emphasized that the shutdown was not based on the content of the feed but was seen as an abuse of Israel’s new foreign broadcaster law. AP’s vice-president of corporate communications urged Israeli authorities to return the equipment and allow the resumption of their live feed to continue providing essential visual journalism globally.
Israel’s communications ministry recently shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in the country, accusing the network of being a “Hamas mouthpiece” and a threat to national security. This action forms part of broader measures against foreign broadcasters perceived as hostile or biased against Israel.
