The busy summer travel season officially kicks off this Memorial Day weekend, with record numbers expected to hit the roads and airports. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) predicts this will be the busiest summer travel season on record, with over 18 million people expected to be screened from now until May 29th.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske states, “We are prepared for an unprecedented travel season and have taken steps to ensure a smooth and efficient process for travelers.” The TSA is deploying additional staff and resources to manage the increased passenger volume and minimize wait times at security checkpoints.

In addition to the high number of air travelers, AAA forecasts nearly 44 million Americans will travel over the long weekend, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. AAA spokesperson, Andrew Gross, notes, “This Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer travel season, and we’re seeing a significant surge in travel demand compared to the past few years.”

The surge in travel comes as Americans seek to take advantage of the long weekend to reunite with family and friends, enjoy vacations, and participate in various recreational activities. Airports and highways are expected to be particularly busy, with travelers advised to plan ahead, arrive early, and remain patient amid the crowds.

For air travelers, the TSA recommends arriving at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights to allow ample time for security screening and other pre-flight procedures. Travelers are also reminded to check the TSA guidelines on prohibited items and ensure their carry-on bags comply with the regulations to avoid delays.

With this significant increase in travel activity, officials are urging everyone to exercise caution and prioritize safety. This includes following health guidelines, staying hydrated, and being mindful of the increased traffic and potential delays.

As the summer travel season gets underway, the travel industry is optimistic about the continued recovery and growth in travel demand, anticipating a busy and successful season ahead.
