Governor Kathy Hochul is highlighting the use of advanced drone technology to spot sharks in the waters off New York state beaches. In an online video, Hochul showcased drones that will patrol the skies over beaches, providing real-time images of the water to lifeguards. This initiative aims to enhance beach safety following a handful of shark encounters off Long Island and New York City beaches last year.
The program involves 40 trained operators who will deploy the drones to monitor shark activity. In addition to the standard drones, the Parks Department police are receiving larger drones equipped with thermal imaging to improve detection capabilities.
Governor Hochul’s introduction of these drones marks a significant step in utilizing technology to protect beachgoers and ensure safe swimming conditions along New York’s coastline.
