Sony Pictures is making a significant move into the movie theater business with the acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The studio announced on Wednesday that it has purchased the Texas-based theater chain, which is known for its unique model of serving food and drinks during screenings and its strict no-talking, no-texting policy.
Alamo Drafthouse, which operates over 30 locations across the United States, has built a loyal following with its distinctive approach to moviegoing. However, the chain faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy three years ago due to the severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the theater industry.
This acquisition marks a notable shift in the industry landscape, as Sony Pictures becomes the first major Hollywood studio to enter the theater market since the prohibition on film distributors owning exhibition companies was lifted in 2020.
