Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announces that the Democratic-led Senate will vote on a bill to ban bump stocks, following a recent Supreme Court decision that deemed a federal ban on the devices unlawful. Schumer criticized the high court’s ruling, emphasizing the need for legislative action to address gun violence and public safety concerns.
“Bump stocks, which enable semiautomatic weapons to fire more rapidly, have no place in our society,” Schumer stated. “The Supreme Court’s decision is a setback, but we will not be deterred. It’s time for Congress to act and ensure these dangerous devices are permanently banned.”
The push for a bump stock ban gained momentum after the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, where the shooter used bump stocks to increase the firing rate of his weapons, resulting in the deaths of 58 people and injuring hundreds more. In response, the Trump administration implemented a federal ban on bump stocks, a move that was widely supported by gun control advocates but faced legal challenges leading to the recent Supreme Court decision.
Schumer is now urging his Republican colleagues to support the bill and not align with “the gun lobby.” He highlighted the importance of bipartisan cooperation to pass meaningful gun control legislation. “We must put the safety of our citizens above special interests,” Schumer said. “This is not a partisan issue; it is a matter of common sense and public safety.”
The proposed legislation seeks to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and possession of bump stocks. Advocates argue that such a ban is essential to prevent future mass shootings and reduce the potential for high-casualty incidents. Opponents, however, contend that the ban infringes on Second Amendment rights and that existing laws already address the misuse of firearms.
