Heat and Smugglers Create Deadly Conditions for Migrants at Texas Border

The scorching heat in West Texas is reaching daily triple-digit temperatures, exacerbating the dangers faced by migrants crossing the border. As the state’s Operation Lone Star forces illegal immigrants into more remote areas, there has been a significant increase in near-death rescues and tragic fatalities.

Border Patrol Agent Refugio Coralles highlights the perilous situation, noting that smugglers show a blatant disregard for migrant safety. “The smugglers don’t care about the migrants’ safety,” Coralles says. Migrants are often given just one glass of water per day, and those who cannot keep up are abandoned in the harsh, unforgiving terrain.

Agent Refugio Coralles says the smugglers are giving migrants just one glass of water a day. And, when they can’t keep up, they get abandoned.

This year alone, Border Patrol agents have rescued 690 individuals, which is 100 more than the previous year and the summer’s peak heat is yet to come. Despite the agents putting their own lives on the line to save others, the rising temperatures and challenging conditions make these operations increasingly dangerous.

The deadly consequences of these treacherous journeys are becoming more apparent. So far this year, there have been nine heat-related deaths among migrants attempting to cross the border. The federal government is intensifying its warnings, emphasizing that illegal border crossings can be lethal.

Operation Lone Star’s strategy of pushing migrants into less accessible areas has inadvertently increased the risks. The barren, rural stretches of West Texas, combined with the extreme heat, create life-threatening conditions that migrants often underestimate.

The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reforms and humanitarian measures to address the root causes of these dangerous crossings and provide safer, legal pathways for migrants seeking refuge and better opportunities.
