A fundraising event dubbed “White Dudes for Harris” provides a significant financial boost for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, raising over four million dollars. The event, a more than three-hour Zoom call held last night, featured a star-studded lineup including actors Jeff Bridges, Sean Astin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Gad, and Mark Hamill, as well as ‘N Sync popstar Lance Bass.
The fundraiser aimed to galvanize support from a demographic that has increasingly leaned right in recent years. An organizer for the group explained that the movement seeks to rally white men who are not aligned with the MAGA movement, stating, “We know that the silent majority of white men aren’t actually MAGA supporters. They’re folks like you who just want a better life for their families.” The successful event, attended by nearly 200,000 people, underscores the potential for broadening Harris’ appeal across diverse voter groups.
However, the momentum from the event faced a setback when the social media account for “White Dudes for Harris” was suspended on X (formerly known as Twitter) shortly after the fundraiser. The suspension, which occurred Monday night, was reportedly due to a user report alleging a violation of platform rules. A manager of the account shared a screenshot showing the suspension notice, accusing X’s owner Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr. of influencing the decision. “We scared Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr. so much tonight they suspended our account and won’t let us back in,” the post read. Musk, who recently endorsed former President Trump, has not commented on the suspension.
The suspension highlights the ongoing tension between political advocacy groups and social media platforms, where content moderation and political affiliations can lead to contentious outcomes. Despite this setback, the “White Dudes for Harris” movement remains determined to support Harris’ campaign and challenge the narrative that the demographic is predominantly conservative.
The Harris campaign has yet to comment on the suspension, but the fundraising success reflects a strong and growing support base. As the campaign progresses, efforts to mobilize diverse voter groups, including those traditionally leaning right, will be crucial in shaping the election landscape.
