The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, a global public health emergency as a rapidly escalating outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) spreads across West and Central Africa. This marks the second time in two years that the WHO has taken this critical step in response to the disease, underscoring the growing severity of the situation.
The declaration comes as the outbreak in the DRC has expanded, leading to more than 17,000 suspected cases and 517 deaths reported across the continent this year alone. The alarming numbers have prompted WHO officials to call for an immediate and coordinated international response to contain the virus and prevent further loss of life.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “It’s clear that a coordinated international response is essential to stop these outbreaks and save lives.” He emphasized the need for global cooperation in addressing the spread of mpox, particularly in regions where health infrastructure is already strained by other challenges, including ongoing conflicts and resource limitations.
The resurgence of mpox in Africa is particularly concerning given the disease’s history and its potential to spread beyond the continent. Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease that primarily occurs in tropical rainforest areas but has the potential to spread to urban centers and across borders due to increased human mobility and international travel. The current outbreak has reignited fears of a more widespread global impact if not swiftly contained.
Health experts are calling for increased surveillance, public health measures, and vaccination efforts to curb the spread of the virus. There is also an urgent need for funding and resources to support affected countries in managing the outbreak and providing care to those infected.
