A recent global study has revealed that Maryland residents have the dubious distinction of being the most prolific swearers in the United States. The research, conducted by word finder service WordTips, analyzed over 1.7 million geotagged posts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to determine which locations around the world use profanity most frequently in their online communications.
The study found that Maryland significantly outpaces other states in the use of curse words, with an average of 66.3 posts per 1,000 containing profanity. This puts the Old Line State well ahead of its closest competitors:
- Maryland (66.3 posts per 1,000)
- Louisiana (61.7 posts per 1,000)
- Georgia (57.4 posts per 1,000)
Drilling down to the city level, Baltimore emerges as the epicenter of colorful language in the U.S., with a staggering 78.2 posts per 1,000 featuring swear words. This rate is notably higher than any other major city in the country, cementing Baltimore’s reputation as a hub for frank and unfiltered expression.
Contrary to popular stereotypes, traditionally outspoken regions like New York and New Jersey ranked lower than expected. New York State placed 17th overall, while New Jersey fared slightly better but still didn’t crack the top 10. This challenges long-held assumptions about which areas of the country are most prone to salty language.
On a broader scale, the study positions the United States as the most “potty-mouthed” country globally, followed by the United Kingdom and Australia. This suggests that English-speaking countries, particularly those with a shared cultural heritage, tend to be more comfortable with profanity in online discourse.
