The footage, made public by the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), shows Hill being forcibly removed from his sports car, handcuffed, and placed on the sidewalk, despite his apparent compliance with officers’ commands.
The incident occurred as Hill was en route to Hard Rock Stadium for the Dolphins’ game against Jacksonville. The video shows officers asking Hill to roll down his window, to which he complied, but tensions quickly escalated. One officer is heard sarcastically asking Hill if he had “surgery on his ears” when he was slow to respond to their orders. Hill, who has previously undergone knee surgery, is seen pleading with officers not to hurt his knee as he is forced to the ground.
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Hill described the ordeal as “crazy,” expressing disbelief that a simple traffic stop could have escalated to such a level. “If I wasn’t who I am, the worst-case scenario could’ve been me getting shot or put behind bars,” Hill said. Despite the altercation, Hill went on to have a standout performance during Sunday’s game, recording 130 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins’ win over Jacksonville.
The Miami Dolphins organization swiftly condemned the actions of the officers involved, calling it “maddening and heartbreaking” to witness the very people entrusted to protect the community act with such hostility. In a public statement, the team called for swift disciplinary action against the officers responsible.
However, reactions from law enforcement experts have been mixed. Dr. David Thomas, a law enforcement veteran and forensic studies professor, acknowledged that officers working game days often have heightened stress, but suggested the situation could have been handled differently. He also noted that Hill might have avoided the confrontation if he had kept his window fully open for the officers’ safety. The South Florida Police Benevolent Association (PBA) defended the officer involved, who has since been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation.
MDPD Police Director Freddy Ramirez stated that the bodycam footage was released to “reinforce the Department’s commitment to keeping the public informed” and that the internal review of the incident is ongoing.
