Wireless data usage in the United States is soaring, with Americans consuming over 100 trillion megabytes of wireless data last year, according to a new survey released by the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) on Tuesday. This marks a staggering 36-percent increase from 2022, representing the largest one-year rise in wireless data usage ever recorded.
The surge in data use is largely attributed to the growing adoption of 5G technology across the country. As more Americans upgrade to 5G-enabled devices, the demand for faster, more reliable data connections has fueled a significant jump in overall consumption. From video streaming to app usage and mobile gaming, the data-intensive nature of modern digital activities continues to drive the trend.
In addition to the sharp increase in data use, the number of wireless connections in the U.S. also rose by 6 percent last year, reaching 558 million. This includes mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, and other connected devices. The ongoing expansion of 5G networks and the increasing popularity of devices like 5G smartphones and smart home systems are helping to push the limits of wireless data capacity.
Industry analysts suggest that this rise in data consumption is just the beginning, as 5G technology continues to expand and evolve. With more devices connected to high-speed networks and Americans relying heavily on wireless data for everything from work to entertainment, the country’s data use is expected to keep growing at a rapid pace.
The CTIA’s findings underscore the growing importance of wireless infrastructure in supporting the digital lifestyles of Americans, with carriers racing to meet the increasing demand for bandwidth.
