For the fourth time in five days, Russian military aircraft have been detected near Alaskan airspace, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Over the weekend, NORAD intercepted two Russian IL-38 military planes flying within Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The aircraft did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace, but their repeated presence has drawn concern from U.S. officials.
NORAD, tasked with monitoring and responding to airspace threats in North America, has characterized the recent activity as “routine” military operations by Russia. However, the increased frequency of these flights has prompted calls for heightened security in the region. U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, who represents Alaska, has voiced his concerns, urging the Biden administration to bolster military presence in the state to counter any potential threats posed by the Russian incursions.
“These intercepts are a clear reminder that we cannot take our eyes off Russia, particularly in the Arctic,” Sullivan said in a statement. “The Biden administration must ensure that we have the resources and military strength necessary to protect our northern borders.”
The IL-38 aircraft, commonly used by the Russian Navy for anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol missions, have been tracked by NORAD since they entered the ADIZ. While the ADIZ is not sovereign airspace, foreign aircraft are required to identify themselves when operating within it. Despite Russia’s repeated military flights in the region, NORAD has confirmed that the encounters have remained professional and in line with international norms.
Military officials stress that these intercepts are part of a broader pattern of Russian military activity in the Arctic, where both Russia and the United States have strategic interests. The Arctic is seen as a key region for military and economic development, and competition between world powers in the area has intensified in recent years.
