In a move that expands food entrepreneurship, Los Angeles County residents can now legally run mini-restaurants out of their homes. As part of the new “Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations” (MEHKO) program, locals are permitted to prepare and sell food to the public directly from their kitchens, offering an exciting opportunity for aspiring home chefs to turn their culinary skills into a business.

Los Angeles County residents can now operate mini-restaurants out of their homes. Phil Hulett has details.

The program, which officially rolled out this week, allows home cooks to apply for permits to operate small-scale food businesses from their private residences. Under the guidelines, residents can serve up to 30 meals a day or 60 meals a week, with an annual revenue cap of $50,000. The MEHKO initiative was designed to provide an accessible path for home cooks, especially those who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, to legally sell their food without needing to invest in a brick-and-mortar establishment.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, a proponent of the program, praised the decision, stating that it “offers a tremendous opportunity for economic growth” by enabling local food entrepreneurs to enter the market in a low-cost, manageable way. The program also prioritizes community health and safety, as all participating home kitchens must adhere to strict health and safety regulations enforced by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

To operate a home-based kitchen, residents must apply for a MEHKO permit and pass inspections to ensure they meet food safety standards. The types of food allowed include everything from home-cooked meals and baked goods to cultural specialties that reflect the diverse culinary landscape of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles joins other California counties that have implemented similar programs, offering home-based chefs an opportunity to bring their homemade creations to the public while maintaining consumer protection standards.

The MEHKO program is expected to not only boost the local economy but also contribute to the rich tapestry of food culture in Los Angeles. With so many talented home cooks in the area, locals are excited to see the variety of cuisines that will emerge as a result of this initiative.
