The U.S. Navy has identified the two aviators who tragically lost their lives in last week’s jet crash near Mount Rainier, Washington. Lieutenant Commander Lyndsay Evans and Lieutenant Serena Wileman, both 31 years old and originally from California, were killed when their EA-18G Growler jet went down during a training exercise. The Navy confirmed their deaths on Sunday.
The crash, which occurred last Tuesday, happened in a remote area east of Mount Rainier, where access is difficult due to rugged terrain and the fact that motorized vehicles cannot reach the site. The jet, based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, was on a routine training flight when it went down, leaving the military community and the families of the victims in mourning.
Governor Jay Inslee has since ordered the Washington National Guard to assist in the recovery of the aviators’ remains, as well as the wreckage of the aircraft. Efforts are underway to navigate the challenging terrain and bring the aviators home to their loved ones. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Navy, with early reports suggesting no immediate signs of mechanical failure or foul play.

The EA-18G Growler is an electronic warfare aircraft designed to provide tactical jamming and electronic protection for military forces. Training flights like the one Evans and Wileman were on are a routine part of maintaining military readiness, but the risks inherent to such operations underscore the dangers that service members face even outside of combat.
