Deputy Wright was tragically shot and killed in 1929 while pursuing notorious outlaws Edna and John “Jack” Powers, a married couple who committed a string of crimes across Arizona and California. The Powers were infamous for their violent robberies and daring escapes, terrorizing local communities during a time when law enforcement faced substantial resource limitations. Wright, serving under the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, was one of several lawmen caught in their path, ultimately losing his life in a confrontation that led to a statewide manhunt for the fugitives.
The long-delayed tribute to Deputy Wright is made possible by the Arizona Fallen Peace Officers Memorial Charity, which recently worked to locate Wright’s unmarked grave and commission a fitting headstone. The new grave marker, crafted to honor his sacrifice, now stands as a permanent reminder of his dedication to upholding the law. Monday’s memorial service saw members of law enforcement, community leaders, and Wright’s descendants gathering to pay respects and acknowledge his heroism.
Sheriff Mark Lamb of Pinal County emphasized the importance of honoring Deputy Wright, noting that while time may pass, the sacrifice of law enforcement officers should never be forgotten. “Deputy Wright’s courage serves as an inspiration to all of us,” said Lamb, who attended the unveiling. “Today, we fulfill a promise to remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who served before us.”
