Russia threatens to attack new US base in Poland with ‘advanced weapons’

Russia has issued a direct threat to the newly opened U.S. missile defense base in Redzikowo, Poland, vowing potential destruction using “advanced weapons” in response to what Moscow perceives as an escalation of nuclear risks. The warning comes just hours after Russia reportedly launched an intercontinental ballistic missile targeting Ukraine, further inflaming an already tense geopolitical environment.

The base, which became operational on November 13, is part of NATO’s Aegis Ashore missile defense system, designed to intercept short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Located near the Baltic coast, the facility represents a key component in NATO’s efforts to bolster European defense against growing missile threats. However, Moscow argues the installation undermines strategic stability and directly threatens its security interests.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated, “Given the nature and level of threats posed by such Western military facilities, the missile defense base in Poland has long been added to the list of priority targets for potential destruction, which, if necessary, can be executed with a wide range of advanced weapons.” She further accused NATO of increasing the nuclear risk in the region by continuing to expand its military infrastructure near Russia’s borders.

This development follows reports of Russia launching an intercontinental ballistic missile at Ukraine on Thursday, an act that signals Moscow’s intent to assert its dominance and willingness to escalate militarily. While details of the missile’s impact remain limited, the attack underscores the volatile nature of the ongoing conflict and its potential to spill over into broader confrontations.

The U.S. and NATO have dismissed Russia’s threats as propaganda, emphasizing that the Redzikowo base is purely defensive and designed to protect NATO allies from missile attacks. A U.S. Department of Defense official reaffirmed that the Aegis Ashore system is not aimed at Russia but is part of a broader strategy to deter missile threats from nations such as Iran. Despite these assurances, Moscow remains unconvinced and continues to frame the base as a destabilizing force in the region.

Polish officials have expressed strong support for the base, calling it a critical asset for national and regional security. “This installation is a cornerstone of our collective defense under NATO,” said a spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Defense. “Threats from Russia will not deter our commitment to ensuring the safety of Poland and our allies.”

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with heightened concerns about the possibility of a direct military confrontation between NATO and Russia. Analysts warn that such threats could escalate tensions further, increasing the likelihood of miscalculations and unintended consequences.

The Redzikowo base’s opening highlights NATO’s ongoing efforts to adapt its defense posture amid growing concerns about Russian aggression. However, Moscow’s fiery rhetoric and recent actions, including its reported missile strike on Ukraine, suggest that tensions in Eastern Europe are far from abating.

As both sides bolster their defenses and rhetoric intensifies, the world watches anxiously, hoping that diplomacy can prevail to avoid further escalation in a region already marked by conflict and instability.
