Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr., a 60-year-old anesthesiologist, has been sentenced to 190 years in federal prison for tampering with intravenous (IV) bags at a surgical center, leading to the death of a colleague and multiple cardiac emergencies among patients.
Between May and August 2022, several patients at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas experienced unexpected cardiac emergencies during routine surgeries. Investigations revealed that these incidents coincided with Dr. Ortiz’s shifts. Surveillance footage showed him placing IV bags into a warmer outside operating rooms shortly before the emergencies occurred.
In June 2022, fellow anesthesiologist Dr. Melanie Kaspar took an IV bag home to rehydrate. After administering the IV, she suffered a fatal cardiac event. An autopsy revealed the presence of bupivacaine, a potent nerve-blocking agent, in her system. Subsequent testing of IV bags from the facility detected similar drugs, leading to suspicions of tampering.
Dr. Ortiz was arrested in September 2022 and charged with multiple counts, including tampering with consumer products resulting in death and serious bodily injury. In April 2024, a federal jury convicted him on all counts. On November 20, 2024, U.S. District Judge Sam A. Lindsay imposed a 190-year prison sentence, emphasizing the gravity of his actions and the breach of trust inherent in his profession.
Prosecutors argued that Dr. Ortiz’s actions were motivated by personal grievances, including dissatisfaction with his work environment and pending disciplinary actions. His tampering led to the death of Dr. Kaspar and caused serious harm to at least 11 patients, undermining trust in medical professionals and highlighting vulnerabilities in healthcare safety protocols.
