On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan. The assailant, described as a masked individual, approached Thompson around 6:45 a.m. as he was arriving for an investors’ conference. The gunman fired multiple shots, striking Thompson in the back and right calf, before fleeing the scene on an electric bicycle. Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.

Police are releasing more surveillance photos of the suspect accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown yesterday. Scott Pringle reports.

Investigators discovered that the shell casings at the scene were engraved with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” These terms closely resemble the title of the 2010 book “Delay, Deny, Defend,” which critiques insurance industry practices. Authorities are exploring potential connections between these engravings and the motive behind the attack.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect waiting outside the hotel prior to the shooting, indicating a premeditated act. Additional images show the suspect without a mask, revealing a man with a grinning expression. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released these photos to the public and is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Thompson’s wife disclosed that he had received threats related to his role at UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest private health insurer. The company has faced criticism over denied claims and high premiums, leading some to speculate that the attack may be linked to industry grievances.

The NYPD is actively pursuing leads, including items recovered from a nearby hostel where the suspect may have stayed. Mayor Eric Adams expressed confidence in the investigation, stating that authorities are moving swiftly to apprehend the perpetrator.

Thompson, who became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, was known for his leadership in the healthcare industry. UnitedHealth Group expressed deep sorrow over his death and is cooperating fully with the investigation.
