In a historic legal proceeding, President-elect Donald Trump has been sentenced to an unconditional discharge in his hush money case, becoming the first convicted felon to assume the U.S. presidency. The sentencing, conducted via video link from his Mar-a-Lago estate, concluded with no additional penalties imposed, allowing Trump to proceed with his inauguration unimpeded.

During the brief hearing, Trump maintained his innocence, labeling the case a “political witch hunt” and an “embarrassment” to New York. He asserted, “It’s been a political witch hunt. It was done to damage my reputation so that I would lose the election, and, obviously, that didn’t work.”

The case centered on allegations that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign. Despite the conviction, Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan opted for an unconditional discharge, citing the unique legal protections afforded to a sitting president. Merchan stated, “Despite the extraordinary breadth of those protections, one power they do not provide is the power to erase a jury verdict.”

Prosecutors supported the no-penalty sentence but criticized Trump’s attacks on the legal system throughout the proceedings. Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass remarked, “The once and future president of the United States continues to undermine public confidence in the rule of law.”

Outside the courthouse, reactions were polarized, with both supporters and critics of Trump voicing their opinions. One group held a banner that read, “Justice for All,” while another group displayed signs accusing Trump of corruption.

Despite the legal challenges, Trump remains focused on his upcoming second term. He is expected to host conservative House Republicans to discuss GOP priorities, signaling his intent to move forward with his administration’s agenda.

Trump’s legal team has indicated plans to appeal the conviction, maintaining his stance of innocence. The case, which brought to light details of alleged extramarital affairs, did not deter voters from re-electing him, underscoring the deep divisions within the American electorate.
