In a recent exercise of executive clemency, President Donald Trump has pardoned Nathaniel Tuck, a former police officer from Apopka, Florida, who was convicted for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Tuck, a member of the far-right Proud Boys organization, had been sentenced to 14 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder and entering and remaining in a restricted area.
Tuck’s attorney informed him of the pardon late Monday evening, bringing relief to his family and supporters. The pardon aligns with President Trump’s previous statements indicating his intention to extend clemency to individuals convicted in connection with the Capitol events.
Nathaniel Tuck, who served as a police officer in Longwood and later in Apopka from 2012 to 2020, joined the Proud Boys in 2018. On January 6, 2021, he traveled to Washington, D.C., with his father, Kevin Tuck, also a Proud Boys member and then a police officer in Windermere, Florida. The duo participated in the events at the Capitol, with Nathaniel pushing past police officers to enter the building and later posing for photographs with fellow Proud Boys members.
The pardon has sparked a range of reactions. Supporters argue that Tuck’s actions were expressions of political dissent and that the pardon rectifies an excessive punishment.
