CNN is set to lay off approximately 200 employees, accounting for about 6% of its workforce, as part of a strategic move to prioritize digital content in response to evolving consumer preferences. CEO Mark Thompson communicated this decision to staff, emphasizing the network’s commitment to adapting to the changing media landscape.
The layoffs primarily affect roles within the traditional television sector, including producers and editors. However, CNN plans to offset these reductions by creating at least 100 new positions focused on digital initiatives, such as data science and product engineering. This approach aims to enhance the network’s digital subscription offerings and develop a comprehensive news streaming service accessible across various devices.
To support this digital transformation, corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery is investing $70 million. The goal is to generate $1 billion in digital revenue by 2030, reflecting a significant shift from traditional broadcasting to digital media consumption.
In addition to staffing changes, CNN is restructuring its television lineup. Veteran anchor Wolf Blitzer is slated to move to a morning show, while Jim Acosta, known for his critical reporting on former President Donald Trump, will transition to a midnight slot. These adjustments aim to align programming with audience viewing habits and bolster the network’s competitive edge.
This restructuring comes in the wake of declining television ratings, particularly following the 2024 presidential election. The network’s viewership has decreased, with fewer households tuning into major events compared to competitors like Fox News.
