On the evening of January 22, 2025, seven officers from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) sustained non-life-threatening injuries during a confrontation with a barricaded suspect in the Stone Oak neighborhood. The incident began when officers responded to a “suicide in progress” call at an apartment complex on Stone Oak Parkway.
Upon arrival, the first responding officer was met with gunfire from the suspect, identified as a man in his 40s. Subsequently, six additional officers were shot during the exchange. All injured officers were promptly transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover.
Following the shootings, the suspect barricaded himself inside his apartment, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours. The SAPD SWAT team was deployed to manage the situation. After negotiations and tactical operations, officers entered the apartment and discovered the suspect deceased. It is currently under investigation whether his death was self-inflicted or resulted from police gunfire.
Chief William McManus revealed that the suspect had prior arrests on January 18 for two counts of assault and one count of driving while intoxicated. At the time of the incident, he was out on bond.
The incident caused significant concern among local residents, with some reporting hearing gunshots and observing a substantial police presence, including helicopters. Authorities evacuated nearby residents to ensure their safety during the standoff.
This event highlights the inherent risks law enforcement officers face while responding to emergency calls. The SAPD has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to provide clarity and ensure accountability.
