In a recent Senate confirmation hearing, Howard Lutnick, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, delivered an emotional testimony reflecting on the tragic loss of over 650 employees, including his brother, during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. As the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, a firm that suffered significant casualties in the World Trade Center, Lutnick recounted the profound impact of that day, stating, “I still can’t say it without getting emotional.” He explained his absence during the attack was due to taking his son to his first day of kindergarten.

Following the tragedy, Lutnick faced the monumental task of rebuilding the company. He offered surviving employees the choice between attending the numerous funerals or focusing on reconstructing the firm. Collectively, they decided to donate 25% of their salaries to support the families of their deceased colleagues, demonstrating a profound commitment to their community during a time of crisis.

Transitioning to current global economic challenges, Lutnick expressed concerns over China’s advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly highlighting the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese startup. DeepSeek has recently developed an AI model that rivals leading U.S. technologies, reportedly at a fraction of the cost. Lutnick emphasized the need for the United States to foster innovation and implement protective measures against such foreign competition.

He underscored the importance of supporting American businesses of all sizes to strengthen the nation’s economy. Lutnick also addressed the necessity of a “thoughtful and rigorous approach” to managing the Commerce Department, focusing on fostering innovation and protecting U.S. interests in the face of global competition.

If confirmed, Lutnick plans to resign from his current positions and divest his assets to prevent any conflicts of interest, ensuring his dedication to public service aligns with ethical standards.
