President Donald Trump has initiated an appeal against his recent conviction in New York related to hush money payments. On January 28, 2025, his legal team filed a formal notice of appeal, challenging both the conviction and the subsequent sentencing.
The conviction stems from allegations that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. In May 2024, a New York jury found him guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He was sentenced earlier this month to an unconditional discharge, a sentence that carries no additional penalties.
In preparation for the appeal, Trump has enlisted a new legal team from the prominent law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, led by co-chair Robert Giuffra Jr. Giuffra emphasized the broader implications of the case, stating, “President Donald J. Trump’s appeal is important for the rule of law, New York’s reputation as a global business, financial and legal center, as well as for the presidency and all public officials.” He further criticized the Manhattan District Attorney’s approach, suggesting it “sets a dangerous precedent.”
This development marks the beginning of what could be a protracted legal battle. Trump’s attorneys are expected to submit detailed arguments in forthcoming court filings, outlining their objections to the conviction and the legal grounds for the appeal. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has not yet issued a public response to the appeal notice.
