The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted 12-10 along party lines to advance President Donald Trump’s nomination of Pam Bondi for Attorney General. The former Florida Attorney General now awaits a full Senate vote for confirmation.
Republican members of the committee praised Bondi’s extensive legal experience and her tenure as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) highlighted her reputation as a “fair career prosecutor who built her reputation by enforcing the rule of law.”
Conversely, Democratic members expressed concerns about Bondi’s perceived loyalty to President Trump and her involvement in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the committee’s ranking member, emphasized the importance of the Attorney General’s independence, stating that the role should serve the American people rather than the President’s personal interests.
Bondi’s nomination has garnered support from various law enforcement organizations, including the National Association of Police Organizations and the Fraternal Order of Police, citing her commitment to law enforcement and public safety.
However, civil rights groups, such as The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, have voiced strong opposition, citing concerns over her record on voting rights and LGBTQ+ issues.
The full Senate is expected to vote on Bondi’s confirmation in the coming days. Given the current Republican majority, her confirmation appears likely, though it remains a focal point of partisan debate.
