Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s administration, has announced plans to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk criticizes the agency as “beyond repair” and asserts that less than 10% of its funds reach those in need. He emphasizes the necessity to dismantle USAID to enhance government efficiency.

Following this announcement, USAID staff members have been instructed to avoid their Washington headquarters, which is currently cordoned off with police tape and officers. Over 600 employees have reportedly lost access to the agency’s computer systems, effectively halting operations. This development comes after the Trump administration placed two top USAID security officials on administrative leave for denying DOGE personnel access to sensitive data. The standoff escalated when DOGE officials threatened to involve U.S. Marshals to gain entry.

Elon Musk says the agency responsible for foreign aid, USAID, is “beyond repair.” NBC’s Garrett Haake has more.
Haake reports the news comes amid a purge that included senior leaders at the FBI who were fired on Friday.

Established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, USAID has been a cornerstone of U.S. foreign assistance, managing $72 billion in global aid in 2023 alone. Its programs encompass a wide range of initiatives, including women’s health, AIDS treatments, anti-corruption efforts, and access to clean water. The agency has also played a pivotal role in providing humanitarian aid to countries such as Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan.

The decision to shut down USAID aligns with President Trump’s “America First” policy and follows a global freeze on U.S. foreign aid. Critics argue that dismantling the agency could jeopardize numerous humanitarian programs, including health initiatives in conflict zones and landmine clearance efforts. The move has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who contend that the President lacks the authority to close the agency without congressional approval. They also express concerns over Musk’s involvement, labeling it an abuse of power.

In response to the shutdown, the international community has voiced apprehension. Organizations such as the World Health Organization and Médecins Sans Frontières warn of potential humanitarian disasters for millions of vulnerable individuals due to the withdrawal of U.S. assistance. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing debates about the future of U.S. foreign aid and the legal implications of the administration’s actions.
