Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s administration, has announced plans to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk criticizes the agency as “beyond repair” and asserts that less than 10% of its funds reach those in need. He emphasizes the necessity to dismantle USAID to enhance government efficiency.
Following this announcement, USAID staff members have been instructed to avoid their Washington headquarters, which is currently cordoned off with police tape and officers. Over 600 employees have reportedly lost access to the agency’s computer systems, effectively halting operations. This development comes after the Trump administration placed two top USAID security officials on administrative leave for denying DOGE personnel access to sensitive data. The standoff escalated when DOGE officials threatened to involve U.S. Marshals to gain entry.
Established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, USAID has been a cornerstone of U.S. foreign assistance, managing $72 billion in global aid in 2023 alone. Its programs encompass a wide range of initiatives, including women’s health, AIDS treatments, anti-corruption efforts, and access to clean water.
