In a heated exchange on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), U.S. Vice President JD Vance and journalist Mehdi Hasan sparred over issues of free speech and press freedom. The confrontation began when Hasan criticized the White House’s decision to ban the Associated Press (AP) from press briefings due to its refusal to adopt the administration’s preferred term “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico.”

Hasan tagged Vice President Vance in a post, stating, “Hey JD Vance, I know you’re busy lecturing the Europeans on free speech, but have you seen this?” This comment referenced Vance’s recent speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he accused European governments of suppressing free speech.

In response, Vance retorted, “Yes dummy. I think there’s a difference between not giving a reporter a seat in the WH press briefing room and jailing people for dissenting views. The latter is a threat to free speech, the former is not. Hope that helps!”

The controversy centers around the White House’s decision to exclude AP journalists from press events after the news agency continued to use “Gulf of Mexico” in its reporting, defying President Donald Trump’s directive to rename it “Gulf of America.” Critics argue that this move undermines press freedom and contradicts the administration’s professed commitment to free speech.

Hasan further challenged Vance by highlighting a recent incident involving Elon Musk, a prominent supporter of the administration, who called for a “long prison sentence” for CBS journalists over unfavorable edits. Hasan questioned, “But your boss Elon Musk just called for a ‘long prison sentence’ for CBS journalists, for edits he didn’t like. Did you not get the memo? Do you agree with Mr. Musk on locking up U.S. TV journos?”

The exchange has ignited a broader debate about the boundaries of free speech and the role of government in regulating the press. While the administration maintains that restricting press access is within its rights, opponents view it as a dangerous precedent that could erode the foundational principles of a free and independent press.
