Starbucks is implementing a significant change to its beverage packaging by introducing fiber-based compostable cups for cold drinks in select locations across 14 states, including California, New York, and Washington. This initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to make all its cups either compostable, recyclable, or reusable by 2030.
The new cups, designed to replace traditional plastic ones, are made from molded fiber and come with flat or dome-shaped lids to accommodate various beverages, including those with whipped toppings. This rollout, which began on February 11, 2025, aims to reduce plastic waste and meet local environmental regulations.
Customer reactions have been mixed. Some patrons appreciate Starbucks’ efforts toward sustainability, while others have expressed dissatisfaction. Critics have noted changes in taste and texture, difficulties with the new lids, and the opaque nature of the cups, which obscure the visual appeal of customized “TikTok drinks.” In response to these concerns, Starbucks encourages customers to bring personal reusable cups or opt for in-store ceramic mugs to enhance their experience.
This initiative is part of Starbucks’ broader “reusable revolution” strategy, which includes making it easier for customers to use personal cups and reducing waste sent to landfills. The company reports that since allowing personal cups for every visit in the U.S., nearly 400,000 Starbucks Rewards members have participated, with 150,000 doing so for the first time. Additionally, 20% of baristas are now using personal cups for their shift beverages.
As Starbucks continues to test and refine these compostable cups, the company remains committed to its sustainability goals. The feedback from these initial locations will inform future decisions regarding a nationwide rollout, as Starbucks strives to balance environmental responsibility with customer satisfaction.
