In the aftermath of a devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 near Green River, Wyoming, authorities have identified the three individuals who lost their lives in the incident. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) announced that the victims are Christopher Johnson, 20, and Quentin Romero, 22, both from Rawlins, Wyoming, and Harmanjeet Singh, 30, from Nova Scotia, Canada.
The tragic event occurred on Friday, February 14, 2025, around 11:30 a.m. A total of 26 vehicles, including 10 passenger cars and 16 commercial trucks, were involved in the crash within the westbound tube of the Green River Tunnel. The collision ignited a massive fire that destroyed eight vehicles and caused significant structural damage to the tunnel. At least 18 individuals sustained injuries and were treated at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs.
Rescue and recovery operations have been challenging due to adverse weather conditions, including snowfall and icy roads, which have impeded the efforts of federal and state investigators. The Wyoming Highway Patrol has been meticulously working to reconstruct the scene to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that weather may have been a contributing factor.
In response to the incident, WYDOT has initiated measures to manage traffic flow in the affected area. The eastbound tunnel is expected to reopen on Wednesday, February 19, to accommodate head-to-head traffic temporarily. However, there is no current estimate for when the westbound tunnel will be operational again, as extensive repairs are required due to the fire damage.
Governor Mark Gordon extended his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting the affected communities. He also highlighted the importance of a thorough investigation to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
