Authorities in Belize are investigating the deaths of three American women—Kaoutar Naqqad, 23; Imane Mallah, 24; and Wafae El-Arar, 26—whose bodies were discovered in their hotel room at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro on February 22, 2025. The women, originally from Morocco and residing in Revere, Massachusetts, were on vacation to celebrate El-Arar’s birthday.
Hotel staff became concerned after the women were last seen entering their room on Thursday night and did not emerge the following day. Attempts to contact them on Friday were unsuccessful. On Saturday morning, staff used a master key to enter the room and found all three women unresponsive. First responders noted froth on their mouths, a potential indicator of drug overdose. No signs of forced entry or visible injuries were observed. Items found in the room included alcohol, electronic vapes, and suspected cannabis “gummies.” Authorities are conducting tests to determine the contents of these substances and are also considering other causes, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. Autopsies are underway to establish the exact cause of death.
Family members and friends have expressed skepticism regarding the overdose theory, describing the women as responsible individuals not inclined toward drug use. At a vigil held in Revere, loved ones mourned their loss and called for a thorough investigation. The U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation and cooperating with Belizean authorities. Local officials, including Revere’s mayor, are seeking answers with federal support.
This incident has raised concerns about safety and crime response in Belize, a popular destination for American tourists. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities reviewing surveillance footage and collecting statements to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
