The Pentagon has initiated ‘Thunderforge,’ a groundbreaking program designed to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into military planning and operations, aiming to accelerate decision-making processes and enhance strategic capabilities. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has awarded the prime contract to Scale AI, a leading AI data training startup, to spearhead this initiative.

Thunderforge represents a collaborative effort involving prominent technology companies. Scale AI is partnering with Anduril, known for its Lattice data-sharing system, and Microsoft, which is providing advanced large language models (LLMs). This consortium aims to develop and deploy AI-powered solutions and custom agentic workflows, all under human supervision, to support military planners.

The initial deployment of Thunderforge is targeted at the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and U.S. European Command (EUCOM). These commands are pivotal in addressing strategic challenges in their respective theaters. The AI tools provided by Thunderforge are expected to assist in campaign development, theater-wide resource allocation, and strategic assessments.

By leveraging advanced LLMs, AI-driven simulations, and interactive agent-based wargaming, Thunderforge aims to enhance how the U.S. military prepares for and executes operations. The integration of AI is anticipated to automate traditional staff processes, assist in drafting plans, and run AI wargames of alternative courses of action, thereby enabling military planners to navigate evolving operational environments more effectively.

The current military planning processes often rely on decades-old technology and methodologies, creating a mismatch between the speed of modern warfare and the military’s ability to respond. Thunderforge seeks to bridge this gap by providing AI-assisted planning capabilities, decision support tools, and automated workflows, thus modernizing American defense and ensuring that U.S. forces can anticipate and respond to threats with speed and precision.

If the initial deployments at INDOPACOM and EUCOM prove successful, there are plans to scale the Thunderforge capabilities across all 11 U.S. combatant commands. This expansion would mark a decisive shift toward AI-powered, data-driven warfare, ensuring that U.S. forces maintain a technological edge in anticipating and responding to global threats.
