Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, is expressing strong opposition to an impending visit by a high-level U.S. delegation, viewing it as part of President Donald Trump’s “very aggressive” campaign to assert control over the Arctic territory. The delegation, led by Second Lady Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, includes National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Egede warns that it’s only a matter of time before Americans take action “over our heads,” signaling deep apprehension about U.S. intentions.

Egede, who is currently leading a caretaker government following Greenland’s recent elections, has criticized the visit as a “provocation” and stated that his administration will not engage with the delegation during their stay. He emphasizes that until recently, Greenland enjoyed a close and cooperative relationship with the United States, referring to them as allies and friends, but asserts that “the time is over.”

The U.S. delegation’s itinerary includes attending Greenland’s national dogsled race, the Avannaata Qimussersu, and visiting the Pituffik Space Base, a U.S. military installation in northern Greenland. While the White House portrays the trip as a cultural exchange aimed at celebrating Greenlandic heritage and strengthening ties, Greenlandic leaders perceive it as a demonstration of power and an infringement on their sovereignty.

President Trump has reignited his interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic importance and rich mineral resources. He has suggested that the U.S. could secure control over the island through economic means or, if necessary, by force. This stance has intensified tensions between the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark, which maintains certain administrative responsibilities over the territory.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has underscored the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty, advocating for negotiations grounded in mutual respect. Despite this, U.S. actions, including increased military presence and diplomatic pressure, have exacerbated local apprehensions about American ambitions.

Greenland’s strategic location in the Arctic and its abundance of valuable minerals have attracted international interest, making it a focal point of geopolitical competition. The current situation underscores the delicate balance Greenland must maintain in navigating relationships with major powers while safeguarding its autonomy and interests.
