Court Documents Reveal Disturbing Contents of Backpack Carried by Luigi Mangione

Newly unsealed court documents shed chilling light on the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Authorities confirm that when Mangione is apprehended in Pennsylvania late last year, he is carrying a black backpack filled with what prosecutors now call a “kill kit,” raising fears that he may have been planning to commit another murder.

According to documents obtained by ABC News and confirmed by law enforcement sources, the backpack contains a loaded firearm, specifically a Glock magazine with 9mm cartridges, a silencer, a knife, chrome drill bits, duct tape, and zip ties. These items are consistent with tools used to restrain or inflict harm, suggesting premeditation beyond the original homicide for which Mangione has already been charged.

Also recovered from the bag are handwritten notes, a list of personal items, and paperwork that ties Mangione to a New York hostel where authorities believe he stayed before the December killing of Thompson. The registration at the Upper West Side hostel is made under the name “Mark Rosario,” which investigators say matches a fake New Jersey ID found in Mangione’s possession.

Mangione, who remains in federal custody, is facing multiple charges, including murder, weapons possession, and identity fraud. Prosecutors argue that the contents of his backpack prove that he was not only equipped to kill but may have been actively preparing for a second act of violence.

The revelation is part of a broader case against Mangione that continues to expand as authorities trace his movements prior to and following the fatal shooting of Thompson. Surveillance footage, hotel receipts, and phone records are being used to build a timeline, while forensic teams analyze digital devices allegedly used by Mangione to plan his attack.

Brian Thompson, a well-known executive in the healthcare industry, was found shot to death in his Manhattan apartment in December 2024. The high-profile murder stunned both Wall Street and Washington, given Thompson’s visibility in the national healthcare debate and corporate leadership.

Mangione’s motive remains unclear, though investigators have not ruled out a targeted personal vendetta or ideological motivations. His aliases and extensive travel between New York and Pennsylvania have complicated the investigation, but the discovery of a silencer and zip ties suggests planning that goes far beyond a spontaneous act of violence.

Legal experts say the newly revealed evidence could dramatically shift the tone of the case. “This isn’t just about a murder that’s already occurred,” said criminal defense attorney Maya Glazer. “This is about what might have happened next. The prosecution will argue it wasn’t over — it was just beginning.”

Mangione is due back in court later this spring, where prosecutors are expected to introduce more evidence and potentially file additional charges. A federal grand jury is currently reviewing aspects of the case that may involve interstate weapons violations and the use of falsified identity documents.

Meanwhile, Thompson’s family has issued a brief statement through their attorney, thanking investigators for their continued work and expressing hope that justice will be fully served.
