In a disturbing sequence of events unfolding in Farmington, New Mexico, Patricia Madrid, 36, who was recently arrested alongside her boyfriend Jammy Jackson, 59, on multiple felony child abuse charges, is found fatally shot outside her home in a shocking development tied to the ongoing investigation.
Madrid and Jackson are taken into custody on February 18, 2025, following allegations of severe abuse involving Jackson’s 15-year-old daughter. The girl, who has autism, ADHD, and fetal alcohol syndrome, tells authorities she was confined in a chicken coop for months between November 2023 and September 2024. According to the teen’s statement, she endured freezing temperatures, minimal food, no restroom access, and even threats of being killed with a firearm by Jackson.
The couple is charged with multiple counts of child abuse and released on bail ahead of a scheduled preliminary hearing on February 26. Madrid’s sudden death occurs on the very morning of that hearing. Farmington police respond to a shooting call at the couple’s residence on North Auburn Avenue, where they find Madrid in her vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She is transported to a hospital but later dies from her injuries.
Surveillance video in the area shows a man fleeing the scene on a bicycle. After weeks of investigation, police arrest 40-year-old Matthew Sandoval on March 28. Sandoval, Madrid’s former brother-in-law, is charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Investigators say Sandoval planned and carried out the attack, referencing surveillance footage and physical evidence left at the scene.
Meanwhile, Jammy Jackson is re-arrested on the same day as Madrid’s shooting for violating the terms of his release by being at the property. He later pleads not guilty to all child abuse charges and is released again under new conditions, including strict prohibitions on contact with minors.
The Farmington Police Department continues to investigate both Madrid’s killing and the ongoing child abuse case. The incident has sparked outrage across New Mexico and renewed calls for improved oversight in child welfare and mental health support for vulnerable youth.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to either case to contact local investigators as both the criminal prosecution and community fallout continue to unfold.
