A renewed political storm erupts in Washington as a House Democrat formally introduces articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, marking the latest escalation in a deeply divided political climate. The move comes just over 100 days into Trump’s second term and threatens to upend the administration’s legislative agenda while intensifying partisan clashes across Capitol Hill.
Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas introduces the impeachment resolution, citing alleged abuses of power, obstruction of justice, and violations of constitutional norms by President Trump since returning to office. Crockett accuses Trump of undermining democratic institutions, encouraging defiance of judicial rulings, and weaponizing federal agencies to pursue political enemies. While the resolution is unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled House, it marks the first formal impeachment effort against Trump in his second term and rekindles longstanding controversies from his earlier presidency.
In a fiery press conference outside the Capitol, Crockett states, “President Trump continues to show a disregard for the rule of law, and the American people deserve accountability. No president is above the Constitution—not now, not ever.” She is joined by a small group of progressive Democrats who argue that Trump’s recent executive actions, including efforts to restrict press access, target dissenting voices within the federal government, and delay compliance with congressional subpoenas, reflect a dangerous pattern of authoritarianism.
The White House dismisses the impeachment resolution as a “political stunt” designed to distract from the administration’s economic progress. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calls the move “a baseless and unserious attempt by desperate Democrats who know they are losing ground with the American public.” Trump himself responds defiantly on Truth Social, labeling the impeachment effort as “deranged” and “part of the never-ending witch hunt.” He vows to “keep fighting for the forgotten Americans.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson condemns the articles of impeachment as frivolous and vows to block any advancement in the House Judiciary Committee. “This is nothing but political theater. The American people are tired of these games,” Johnson says.
Though the resolution is unlikely to gain traction, it revives painful political memories. Trump was previously impeached twice during his first term—first in 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection to the Ukraine scandal, and again in 2021 for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol riot. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.

In the broader context, the impeachment effort underscores the fragility of American political norms. Democrats argue that Trump’s conduct, even after returning to power through democratic elections, cannot be ignored or normalized. Republicans accuse Democrats of using impeachment as a routine tool of opposition, rather than a last-resort constitutional safeguard.
Public opinion remains sharply divided. A new Quinnipiac poll shows that 48% of registered voters oppose any new impeachment effort, while 42% support it. Independent voters are split, with many expressing fatigue over ongoing political battles and expressing a desire for legislative action on pressing issues such as inflation, border security, and healthcare.
As the resolution is read into the Congressional Record, it is unclear whether it will even receive a committee vote. But the move is symbolic of deepening partisan rifts, and it ensures that Trump’s legal and ethical record will remain a contentious issue heading into the 2026 midterms.
