Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is alleging that officials from the Turkish government tried to bribe him shortly after he took office. Reynoso revealed in an interview with a New York City TV station that he was sent eight porcelain tea sets and offered an all-expenses-paid trip to Turkey, both of which he promptly declined.

Brooklyn’s borough president claims Turkish officials tried to bribe him. Lisa G. reports.

Reynoso explained that the unsolicited gifts arrived following his swearing-in, raising immediate concerns. “I returned the tea sets and turned down the trip,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to avoiding any appearance of impropriety. The Brooklyn official suggested that this approach by Turkish officials mirrored similar overtures made during the tenure of his predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams, when Adams served as Brooklyn Borough President.

Reynoso’s claims come as Adams faces a five-count federal indictment, including accusations that he accepted bribes in the form of lavish trips and illegal campaign contributions from Turkish officials in exchange for political favors. Adams, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, maintains his innocence and vows to fight the allegations in court.

Reynoso expressed concern that Adams’ previous office may have set a precedent for foreign officials attempting to gain favor. “It seems like Turkey saw an opportunity with Adams’ administration and tried the same thing with me,” he said. Reynoso’s allegations further complicate the scrutiny surrounding Adams, whose legal troubles have ignited political controversy and calls for his resignation.

The borough president’s remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing investigation into foreign influence within New York City politics, as federal authorities continue to probe Adams’ alleged involvement with foreign officials. Reynoso has not indicated whether he has been contacted by investigators, but his disclosure may contribute to broader concerns about foreign interference.

As the legal battle around Mayor Adams continues, the alleged attempts by foreign governments to bribe U.S. officials remain under the spotlight, raising questions about ethical governance and international influence in local politics.
