United Auto Workers (UAW) president Shawn Fain is warning of a potential strike against automaker Stellantis if the company does not comply with the terms of a contract agreed upon last year. Fain made the announcement during his “state of the industry” address, where he accused Stellantis of breaching the labor contract by failing to restart operations at a key plant in Illinois and halting production of the Dodge Durango in Detroit.
Fain criticized Stellantis, the multinational automaker formed through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot, for failing to honor its commitments, which were negotiated during the last round of contract talks. The Illinois plant, which was supposed to be revived under the agreement, remains idle, raising concerns among workers about job security and the future of the auto industry in the region.
“The UAW is prepared to strike if Stellantis continues to violate the contract,” Fain said, signaling that the union is ready to take action if the automaker does not address the union’s concerns. He emphasized that the closure of key plants, such as the Detroit-based Dodge Durango production line, is jeopardizing thousands of jobs, which could destabilize entire communities reliant on the auto industry.
In response to these issues, Fain has organized a rally that will take place at the Stellantis Stamping Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, to rally support from union members and pressure the company to meet its obligations. The rally is expected to draw hundreds of UAW members and supporters, further escalating tensions between the union and the automaker.
Stellantis has yet to publicly respond to Fain’s allegations, but industry experts warn that a strike could significantly disrupt operations, especially as automakers are dealing with ongoing supply chain challenges and shifting towards electric vehicle production. Any work stoppage would add to the strain, potentially leading to significant delays in vehicle production and financial losses for the company.
Fain’s announcement comes at a time when the UAW is increasingly assertive in its demands for better pay, job security, and protection against plant closures.
