Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is intensifying his efforts to investigate potential issues with the state’s voter rolls, calling on the White House to provide data that could help identify up to half a million individuals who he claims may be improperly registered to vote. Paxton, a Republican, has voiced concerns about voter integrity in Texas ahead of the 2024 presidential election, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of the state’s voter registration process.
Paxton’s office points to what they describe as a ballooning voter roll, suggesting that a significant number of those registered may not be legally eligible to vote, including non-citizens. He believes that better cooperation between federal and state data systems could help identify and remove ineligible voters. “The integrity of our elections is paramount, and it’s crucial we ensure that only eligible voters are casting ballots,” Paxton said in a recent statement.
However, experts and critics argue that concerns about illegal voting are overblown. Mark Jones, a political scientist and pollster at the University of Houston, points out that numerous studies have shown no evidence of widespread illegal voting by non-citizens. “There is no mass conspiracy involving illegal immigrants registering to vote as some Republicans have suggested,” Jones explained.
Paxton’s push for tighter voter roll oversight has drawn attention as part of a broader effort by Republican leaders to address what they perceive as vulnerabilities in the election system. His call for federal cooperation follows years of debate over voter ID laws, election integrity measures, and allegations of voter fraud—issues that have remained at the forefront of political discussions since the 2020 presidential election.
Despite Paxton’s concerns, many election experts argue that a growing voter roll is not necessarily problematic, as it can reflect an increasingly engaged electorate or improved voter registration efforts.
