Authorities are investigating a tragic incident at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine that resulted in the death of one individual and left several others trapped underground for hours on Thursday. The accident unfolded roughly an hour west of Colorado Springs and has left the local community in shock.
A group of 23 tourists was touring the historic mine when an elevator malfunctioned, leading to a massive rescue operation. The visitors were split into two groups when the accident occurred. The second group of 12 tourists endured a harrowing six-hour ordeal, trapped nearly 1,000 feet underground before rescue crews were able to bring them up safely. All survivors are reported to be in stable condition, though some required medical evaluation due to the prolonged period underground.
