In a decisive response to escalating trade tensions, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the United States, effective immediately. This measure targets approximately 1.5 million American consumers in the states of Minnesota, New York, and Michigan, who rely on electricity supplied by Canada’s most populous province.

Premier Ford emphasizes that this action is a direct countermeasure to President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on Canadian imports, which have strained bilateral relations and economic exchanges between the two nations. He asserts that the U.S. tariffs are detrimental to the American economy, increasing costs for families and businesses alike. Ford states, “Until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario won’t back down. We’ll stand strong, use every tool in our toolkit and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario.”

The newly implemented surcharge requires any Ontario-based electricity generator exporting power to the U.S. to add a 25% fee, equating to an additional $10 per megawatt-hour. This adjustment is projected to generate daily revenues between 300,000 and 400,000 Canadian dollars, funds that the provincial government intends to utilize in supporting Ontario’s workers, families, and businesses during this period of economic uncertainty.

Ford further warns that should the United States escalate the trade dispute, Ontario is prepared to take more drastic measures, including the complete cessation of electricity exports to the affected states. He expresses regret over potential hardships this may cause American consumers but places responsibility squarely on President Trump’s policies. Ford remarks, “I feel terrible for the American people who didn’t start this trade war. It’s one person who is responsible, it’s President Trump.”

This development underscores the deepening rift in U.S.-Canada trade relations, with energy exports becoming a focal point of contention. The situation continues to evolve, with both sides assessing further actions in this escalating economic standoff.
