A Catholic priest has been sentenced to two years on probation and ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution. Reverend Tomasz Gorny must also leave the priesthood.

Channel 22 reported that he was accused of stealing more than $100,000 from the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Granby over a three-year period for personal items.

Police launched an investigation after a Diocese of Springfield audit found suspicious use of church funds.

Gorny reportedly used church funds to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, and other personal items. He also traveled to Europe and the Dominican Republic using church funds.Gorny pleaded guilty to the charges in September 2023.

Gorny was sentenced to two years on probation and ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution. The Diocese of Springfield has also placed Gorny on administrative leave.

The investigation into Gorny’s theft began in December 2020 after a Diocese of Springfield audit found suspicious use of church funds. The audit found that Gorny had made $100,000 in unauthorized credit card transactions and withdrawn $40,000 from the parish’s checking account.

Gorny’s theft is a serious crime that has hurt the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. His sentence of two years on probation and $12,000 in restitution is just. This case is a reminder that no one is above the law, not even members of the clergy.
